New York’s Hospitals: From “Bad To Worse
New York State’s hospitals have the worst grades in the nation, according to Medicare’s Hospital Compare. New York rates 50th out of 50, with only the District of Columbia scoring lower.
A startling new report from New York’s Empire Center, New York hospitals average just 2.18 stars out of five, down from 2.32 stars in 2017. The star ratings are provided on Medicare’s Hospital Compare website, which helps patients and their families choose medical facilities based on the quality of care provided. The rankings consider factors like patient safety — including mortality data — infection rates, surveys of patient experiences, and the effectiveness of treatments provided. Hospital for Special Surgery is the only hospital to win five stars.
“Hospitals in New York should offer the best care, but instead they offer excuses year after year about why the rankings are ‘unfair’ to them. It’s time they focused on infection prevention and other safety issues, ” said Betsy McCaughey, Chairman and Founder of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, a non-profit dedicated to fighting hospital infections and improving patient safety. “RID is ready to help them improve.”
